You already have the photo. The important decision is whether that exact moment must stay unchanged or whether you want to turn it into a new, styled scene.

That choice determines the safest way to turn a photo into a greeting card with AI. Keep the original when the real faces and expressions matter most. Create a styled version when you want a different setting, mood, or visual theme.

In this guide, a greeting card is a flat image with a personal message. It is not a prepaid card and does not contain money, a balance, or a redemption code.

Choose Between the Original Photo and a Styled Version

Both routes end in the same place: you add the final wording with PhotoGPT's Text-in-Image tool. If you keep the original photo, upload it directly to Text-in-Image without regenerating it. If you want a styled version, create that image first and add the wording afterward.

Your priority	Keep the original photo	Create a styled version
Best for	A real birthday moment, a group photo, or an expression you do not want to change	A new background, illustrated look, seasonal scene, or more polished card composition
What stays fixed	The people, expressions, clothing, and setting in your source photo	The general person or idea, while generated details can vary
Where to start	Text-in-Image	A fresh PhotoGPT generation, or a trained personal model when one person's likeness matters
Main trade-off	Less freedom to change the scene	The result may not match every detail of the original photo

If exact likeness matters, use the original photo directly. If the visual treatment matters more, create a styled version and review it carefully before adding the message.

Pick a Photo That Will Work as a Card

A meaningful photo is not automatically a good card photo. It also needs clear faces, usable framing, and somewhere for the message to sit.

Check the Face, Light, and Image Quality

Use a photo where the important person is easy to recognize without zooming in.

Choose a sharp image with the face fully visible.
Prefer soft, even light over deep shadow or harsh backlight.
Avoid screenshots, heavy beauty filters, and compressed copies when the original file is available.
Make sure hair, hands, sunglasses, or other objects do not hide the features you care about.
For a styled result, use a recent photo that still looks like the person today.

PhotoGPT's input-image guide shows clear examples of useful and unsuitable personal-model photos.

Clear faces, useful framing, and varied angles make stronger inputs when you choose the styled-photo route.

Treat Group Photos Differently

A group photo can make an excellent birthday or anniversary card because it preserves a shared memory. It is not a good training image for a personal AI model, which needs clear solo photos of the same person.

For a group greeting card, the safer option is usually to keep the original image and add the message in Text-in-Image. Crop distracting edges if needed, but leave enough room around every face. Do not cut someone out just to create space for a headline.

A group photo may be meaningful on the finished card, but it should not be part of a single-person model's training set.

Leave Text-Safe Space Before You Crop

Text-safe space is a calm part of the image where words can remain readable. It might be an open wall, sky, table, or softly blurred background.

Before cropping, decide where the longest line will go. Then check that:

no face sits directly under the planned message;
the top of the head, chin, and important hands stay inside the crop;
the text area is not filled with patterns or strong highlights;
names and dates have enough width to stay on one or two clean lines;
the card still reads clearly when viewed at phone size.

If the only open area is on the left, place the people slightly to the right. If the photo has no calm area at all, use a short line with a shadow or choose a wider crop.

Route 1: Keep the Exact Photo and Add Your Message

This is the best route when the photo itself is the gift. A genuine laugh, a family celebration, or a couple's favorite picture does not need to be regenerated to feel special.

1. Prepare a Copy of the Original

Keep the untouched file and work from a copy. Crop only what distracts from the main moment, and preserve the text-safe space you identified.

Starting with the largest, clearest version of the photo also helps the finished card keep its detail. Text-in-Image exports at the working dimensions of the image you upload.

2. Add the Exact Wording in Text-in-Image

Open Text-in-Image and upload the JPG, JPEG, or PNG. Add separate text layers when you need a main greeting and a smaller personal line.

For a birthday card, that could be:

Happy Birthday, Maya

Still my favorite person to celebrate with.

Keeping the two lines separate gives you more control over their size, font, and position.

3. Choose the Placement That Protects the Photo

Use In Front when the message must remain completely visible. Use Behind Subject when the detected person can sit naturally in front of part of the lettering without making it hard to read.

Whichever mode you choose:

use a text color that clearly separates from the background;
add a light shadow when the photo is busy;
keep the personal message shorter than the main greeting;
avoid placing small text across hair, eyes, or detailed clothing.

The Text-in-Image guide explains the text layers, placement, fonts, colors, spacing, shadows, and rotation controls.

4. Check the Names Before Downloading

Read every name, date, and punctuation mark one final time. Then download the finished flat PNG. The original people and moment remain in the photo, with your chosen wording added on top.

Route 2: Create a Styled Version Before Adding Text

Choose this route when you like the person in the photo but want to try a different visual world around them. You might want a brighter birthday setting, a softer anniversary portrait, or a simple illustrated thank-you image.

1. Choose the Right PhotoGPT Starting Point

For a new birthday, anniversary, or thank-you scene, start with a fresh PhotoGPT generation. If the result needs to look like one particular person across several generated options, use a trained personal model. Generated details can still vary, so keep the original-photo route for moments that must remain unchanged.

A trained personal model requires a curated set of 12 to 15 clear solo photos, not one group image. If you need help preparing that set, follow PhotoGPT's input-image guide.

2. Describe the Scene and Reserve Space for Text

Ask for the occasion, mood, lighting, subject position, and a quiet area for the greeting. Do not put the final message inside the image prompt. Add that wording afterward, where you can control every letter.

A focused birthday direction could be the following. Treat it as a starting point, not a tested recipe, and review the actual result before using it.

Warm birthday portrait inspired by the uploaded photo, soft golden light,
colorful paper decorations, person positioned on the right, clean open space
on the left, natural expression, greeting-card composition, no words or letters

This direction tells the generator what the card needs without asking it to reproduce a completed design.

3. Review the Result Before You Build the Card

Do not choose a result only because the background looks attractive. Check the parts that matter to the recipient:

Does the person look recognizable enough for this use?
Are the face, hands, clothing, and important details believable?
Is the expression suitable for the occasion?
Is the planned text area genuinely clear?
Will the crop still work after the greeting is added?

If the person no longer feels like the person you intended to celebrate, use the original-photo route instead. A less stylized card with the right face is more personal than an impressive card with the wrong one.

4. Add the Final Message Separately

Move the selected image into Text-in-Image, add the exact greeting, and apply the same readability checks used for the original-photo route.

Match the Photo and Message to the Occasion

The same basic method can create personalized photo greeting cards for several occasions. What changes is the feeling you preserve and the amount of styling you add.

Birthday Card From a Photo

Birthday cards can carry more color and personality. Start with a photo that shows the recipient's character, not simply the most formal portrait you have.

Keep the original for a funny candid, a group memory, or a childhood photo.
Use a styled version for a new party scene or a cleaner card layout.
Put the recipient's name in the main line.
Add one sentence that could only have come from you.

“Happy Birthday” makes the purpose clear. The second line is what makes the card personal.

Anniversary Card From a Couple's Photo

For an anniversary, the connection between the two people matters more than decoration. Keep both faces comfortably inside the crop and avoid placing text between them.

The original-photo route is usually stronger for a favorite shared memory. Only use a styled version after checking that the actual result preserves both people well. Otherwise, keep the original. Use simple wording, such as a short anniversary greeting followed by a date or private line.

Thank-You Card From a Personal Photo

A thank-you card works best when the photo has a reason to be there. Use a picture connected to the help, event, trip, gift, or memory you are thanking someone for.

The message should name the person and the reason for your thanks. A clear photo with a specific note will feel more personal than a decorative card with a generic “Thank you.”

Use this final check for either route:

The correct people are visible and recognizable.
No face, head, or important detail is cut by the crop.
The greeting is readable without zooming in.
Names, dates, and punctuation are correct.
The message does not compete with the photo.
A styled image has been checked for unexpected facial, hand, or clothing details.
The file is understood as a flat greeting-card image, not a redeemable monetary gift card.

If those checks pass, the card is ready to share as an image. PhotoGPT does not provide a folded or multi-page card, printing, mailing, or print-ready production files as part of this workflow.
