This guide will help you get familiar with the superpowers of our expert AI Photo Editor. We'll learn how to retouch, adjust, combine, and transform your images with just a few clicks.

PhotoGPT’s AI Editor lets you edit any uploaded image using simple text instructions. You can perform a range of actions including remove objects, fix lighting, blend images, apply filters, or enhance details. This guide will deep dive into the image editing toolkit and how you can use it to achieve your desired results on any kind of image.

1. Tools available within the AI Photo Editor

The editor supports a wide range of edits allowing you to:

  • Retouch for minor fixes or removing unwanted objects
  • Combine two images (subject + background, style + base photo, etc.)
  • Adjust lighting, colors, or background tone
  • Apply creative filters and moods

2. Getting Started

  1. Open the editor by clicking on the AI Image Editing tab in your dashboard

  2. Upload your image (PNG, JPG, JPEG up to 10MB)

  3. Choose the model for your edit. PhotoGPT currently supports:

    • Nano Banana and Nano Banana Pro
    • Seedream 4.0 and Seedream 4.5

    You can switch models at any time before generating.

3. Editing Modes and their Specialities

Let's talk about the four key modes of Image Editing. These modes, in combination, can help you achieve pretty much anything.

3.1 Retouch: Clean or Remove Anything

Use this mode when you want to erase or fix something in your photo, the AI fills the modified area naturally.

This mode can help you in:

  • Removing people or objects to get clean backgrounds
  • Fixing skin tone or flyaway hair or simply erasing any small distractions

Here's how it works:

  1. Select Retouch and click on the area you want to edit.
  2. Describe the edit and select the model you want to use.
  3. Hit Generate.

  • “Remove the person in the background.”
  • “Smooth skin tone.”
  • “Erase the coffee cup on the table.”

3.2 Combine Images: Merge Backgrounds, Styles, or Subjects

This mode lets you use up to 10 images to merge elements such as backgrounds, subjects, or styles.

With the combine mode, you can:

  • Move a subject into a completely new location or setting
  • Copy lighting or visual style from another photo
  • Replace backgrounds, clothing or create blended creative concepts

Below are key steps to make this work:

  1. Select Combine and upload two or more images.
  2. Pick the model you want to work with and describe the merge using a prompt, be as detailed possible.
  3. Hit Generate.

3.3 Adjust: Fix Lighting, Color & Details

Use this mode when you want to refine the overall look of your photo.

You can adjust the lighting (studio, warm, cool) or change background, create contrast effects, remove shadows, enhance details or revamp the entire composition of the image.

There are several preset actions provided with this mode however you can write your own prompt to do a complete transformation.

Here are a few example prompts that can be used in this mode

  • “Apply cinematic lighting with warm tones.”
  • “Blur background for DSLR-style portrait.”
  • “Remove shadows from the product surface.”
  • “Enhance details on the fabric.”

4. Full Editing Flow

If lighting looks too intense:
Use more subtle phrases (e.g., “soft warm light”).

If the blend looks off in Combine:
Switch between Nano Banana, and Seedream to compare.

If a filter is too strong:
